The Door Community Auditorium presents
ST. NORBERT DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES:
“Of Saddled Dinosaurs and Beached Arks: Evolutionism versus Creationism”
Dr. Anindo Choudhury
Charles Darwin’s theory of Evolution was simple, but radical, when proposed in his 1859 book “The Origin of Species.” Over a century and a half, the “theory of evolution” had been universally accepted as the most robust explanation of the diversity of life on our planet. Today, however, Darwin’s theory is under attack. In a discussion of evolutionism, Dr. Anindo Choudhury will address how the theory is being challenged and exploited by American life and politics on Saturday, February 2. The program begins at 9 am.
Dr. Choudhury, St. Norbert College associate Academic Dean and associate professor of Biology and Environmental Science, is a prominent biologist who has done extensive research on parasites. “During the last century and a half, the theory of evolution, as it is formally known, has been universally accepted as the most robust explanation of the diversity of life on our planet,” he reported.
“Yet, it is here in the United States of America, the most technologically advanced nation in the world, home of the finest institutions of higher learning, whose intelligentsia is the envy of the world and its people heirs to the legacy of Jefferson and the free-thinking founders, that we find evolution often mocked and dismissed.
“Publicly and privately, the theory is ignored by ordinary people, as well as, high level officials. In the minds of the people suspicious of science textbooks, evolution is comfortably replaced by ‘creationism,’ or the latest, apparently more sophisticated iteration, ‘intelligent design,’” concluded Choudhury.
Within the context of his talk, Dr. Choudhury will explain what evolution is--and what it is not, the underlying causes and the modus operandi of the protagonists. Whether such issues reveal an age-old tension between faith and reason will conclude the discussion.
The St. Norbert Distinguished Lecture Series is free and open to the public. The final two lectures are “Aging: Opportunities and Challenges” on March 1st, and “The Risks and Promises of Forgiveness” on March 15th contact the box office at 920.868.2728 or visit www.dcauditorium.org.
