St. Norbert Distinguished Lecture Series

“Aging:  Opportunities and Challenges”

Dr. Tom Faase

Current demographics demonstrate that the number of senior citizens is rapidly increasing in the state of Wisconsin, as well as on a national level.  In a presentation entitled “Aging:  Opportunities and Challenges,” Dr. Thomas Faase, associate professor of Sociology at St. Norbert College, will explore the related issues of life as a senior in the United States.  This program will be presented at the Door Community Auditorium on Saturday, March 1st at 9:00 am.

In the years immediately following World War II, 1946 – 1964, a record number of births were recorded in the United States.  It is estimated that approximately 76 million Americans were born during this 18-year period.  Identified as the “baby boomers,” their numbers currently represent 28% of the United States population.

The impact of this aging population is enormous, affecting all aspects of governmental services, medical services, education, politics, and the economy.  Prominent “baby boomers” include former President Bill Clinton, President George W. Bush, and Democratic presidential candidate Hilary Clinton.

Based on specific statistics, Dr. Faase will explore the challenges seniors face as Americans. “With this background information, we can ascertain that opportunities are opening up for seniors,” said Dr. Faase.  “There is a changing perception of the elderly among Americans.  I would like to address the different viewpoints and debunk some of the myths surrounding aging.”

Specific questions under discussion during this presentation include what are the opportunities available to seniors? What are the hindrances that accompany senior status? What is the perception of the elderly among Americans? What are the social implications of issues of economics, health care and retirement?

Dr. Faase joined the St. Norbert College faculty in 1983.  He is a widely acclaimed author whose articles and reviews have appeared in numerous professional journals; he has presented a number of papers at conferences around the world.  With his extensive knowledge of family issues, Dr. Faase is frequently requested as a presenter in relationship to family.

The St. Norbert Distinguished Lecture Series is free and open to the public.  The final lecture in the series is “The Risks and Promises of Forgiveness,” on March 15th.
