Stem Cell Research
Stem Cell Research has been controversial because it uses embryonic cells that were thus not allowed to develop into human fetuses. The big issue is when does life begin. What about the masses of other embryos created in fertility enhancement practices that are just discarded? The new development that allows the use of adult stem cells diminishes the controversy but the basic moral question of when does life begin (and when does it end) remains. Should Science answer that question or should Religion or can they do it together? And how do we reach a consensus on the issue in a democratic society?
