National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger! Food Drive
to Benefit Local Agencies
Postal workers across Marquette County will be picking up food donations at residents’ mailboxes on Saturday, May 10, 2008, for the 16th annual National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger! Food Drive. This nationwide event provides citizens the opportunity to donate nonperishable food to local agencies by leaving it at their mailboxes for letter carriers to pick up. Glass containers or out-of-date items should not be included. All collections will be brought back to the central post offices, divided up, then distributed to local agencies.
The following agencies are recipients of the food: Great Lakes Recovery Center, Harbor House, the Janzen House, Lake Superior Village Youth and Family Center, the Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, and Voices for Youth. United Way of Marquette County is helping to promote the event and coordinate food distribution.
Shelves at many community food banks and pantries are nearly empty. The need for food exists year-round, and the donations help agencies save resources on limited budgets.
Stamp Out Hunger! is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. Approximately 12,000 pounds of food were collected in Marquette County last year. This year, the need in Marquette County has grown due to budget cuts for basic need programs. Marquette County residents are asked to clean out their pantries and consider buying extra when they shop to prepare for the May 10th food drive.
