2009 Veterans Day Observances in Oshkosh
Veterans Day Services will be held Nov. 11 at the entrance of the Winnebago County Courthouse. The service will begin at 10:40 a.m. with a short procession of the Colors. Tony Blando, Lt. Col., U.S. Army Retired, will be the guest speaker. Memorial wreaths will be placed at the entrance of the courthouse and the ceremony will conclude with a rifle salute and the playing of “Taps” at approximately 11:00 a.m. Veterans' units planning to participate should arrive at 10:15 a.m.
This annual event is sponsored by the Oshkosh Patriotic Council, which is composed of representatives from Oshkosh area veterans and patriotic organizations.
“Armistice Day” was established in 1938 as a day dedicated to world peace and to honor World War I veterans. The date commemorates the armistice that was signed by the Allies and Germany and that took effect at the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918. In 1954, the name was changed to “Veterans Day” to honor American veterans of all wars.
