Alzheimer’s: Forgetting Piece by Piece
“Alzheimer’s: Forgetting Piece by Piece,” a national quilt exhibit, will be on display in the new Village Square at Felician Village, 1635 S. 21st Street, November 13 and November 14. The work of 52 quilt artists from around the country is represented in the exhibit. The artists, many internationally renowned, offer poignant interpretation of the Alzheimer’s experience in fiber. Themes include imaginings of an existence stripped of memory and learning; gritty illustrations of the anger, frustration, and stress of care-giving; beautiful tributes to loved ones taken by Alzheimer's; and the anticipation of a future cure. They are quilts of heartbreak and hope. With each quilt is a statement from the artist explaining their personal relationship with Alzheimer’s. Each artist statement is paired with a fact about Alzheimer’s.
“With two different households at Felician Village dedicated to providing care for residents with Alzheimer’s and other dementia, we are well aware of the impact Alzheimer’s has on the residents and all the people who love and care for them,” said Vicky Schneider, Director of Spiritual Care, Felician Village. “It is our hope that by hosting this nationally acclaimed quilt exhibit we can help foster greater understanding of this disease, the tremendous challenges it presents to so many people, and the need for continued research to find a cure”.
This quilt show tour started in August of 2006 and will finish in October 2010. It was in Jackson and Milwaukee in May 2008. The stop at Felician Village is the only other scheduled Wisconsin stop in the four-year schedule. The exhibit will be open to the public on Friday, November 13 from 10 a.m. until 6:00pm and again on Saturday, November 14, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. There is a $5.00 entrance fee to the display. A 112-page full color book and a computer CD with photographs narrated by the artists of the exhibit will be available for sale.
The Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI) is a national, grassroots organization whose mission is to raise awareness and fund research for Alzheimer’s disease. “Alzheimer’s: Forgetting Piece by Piece” is just one of its efforts. The AAQI, a non-profit organization operated entirely by volunteers, has raised and donated more than $316,000 for Alzheimer’s research since January 2006. Ami Simms, whose mother had Alzheimer’s, is the founder and executive director of AAQI and curator of the exhibit.
