Owning a Piece of the Goal Post

I did not attend the ice bowl but my father did, and though he is gone now, I can still hear him telling the stories of how cold it was and how he brought styrofoam to put on the stadium floor to help keep his feet warm.  He also sat wrapped in a sleeping bag to help keep warm.  He retold the quarterback sneak story so many times...

I have a constant reminder of the Ice Bowl as I now have my Dad's plaque with a piece of the goal post from the Ice Bowl. It was given to him by his friend Chuck Vannes.  It is proudly displayed in the "Packer Bathroom" that my sons use when they are home.  My sons still sit in the seats purchased by their grandfather when the new stadium was built.

Re: Owning a Piece of the Goal Post

Dear Diane: My father was Chuck Vannes and my daughter found your message on this web site the night her Grandfather died (2-6-08), and was so surprised to see one of his goalpost plaques on the web!

My father (her Grandfather) was Chuck Vannes! Our brother and a brother-in-law helped pull down the goalpost after the game and then gave pieces of it to my dad, and he made 35-40 of those plaques over the years. I know he presented one to Bart Starr, family members (I have one, too!), and friends. I wish I knew who they all are.

Thanks for sharing a little piece of my father's history with us all!

    Jeri (Vannes) Deprey
